I'm a big fan of Geo Metros (Suzuki Swift) and had a couple of these as my daily drivers . One of them had the 3 cyl engine like the one you're talking about, but not the ultra fuel sipping XFI. That said, mine would get about 48 mpgs even with the slightly heavier and far safer Gen 3 (1995-2000) body.

They (the Gen 3s at least) are really great cars--ultra simple, surprisingly roomy inside, and ride fairly stiff and handle great with a decent stock front swaybar and 4 wheel independent suspension. I stuffed an apartment sized stove in the hatchback once and logged a bunch of time on rough dirt roads going camping. Tthey have a little more clearance than typical Japanese cars. They're surprisingly tough, great in snow, and incredibly simple to work on. They rally race them in Britain and there's a great community of enthusiasts at teamswift.net. The 1.3 4 cyl engine is smoother and stronger and there's lots more mods available, but of course takes a bite out of the fuel economy. Stay away from the 3 speed automatic transmissions if you want any performance or fuel economy at all.

i've been told it could hit the early 60's for mpg for this xfi,mpg like that could easily compensate for more van's

Over 60 mpgs seems a tall order, but users on ecomodder.com say they have achieved it. Its probably the best place to research the metro XFI.

Hello! Someone looking for me? :)

How can I help? I do do believe I have over 50% of the remaining XFi's/engines/components left in America...:)

I've been pulling 55MPG all summer long in my 89 "stealth" XFi (1st year of the metro and covert XFi's)

how come your my vehicles says 60+?i've heard there suppose to get atleast 55 mpg,my question is how reliable are they?I have a chance to buy a 90 xfi that needs body work from what i understand in all the typical area(rocker panels, near taillights, doors, the part where the rack comes out i believe inner fender area i guess u'd call it) as well as an alternator and alternator belt, the guy wants 500 but i figured i'd try to jew him down to like 300 considering all the body work it needs.

There is one area on the metro that if its rusted one should stay away (unless you're harvesting XFi parts, which is how I got 6 spare XFi motors/trans) its the lower control arm where the front A-arm connects to the uni-body. When they break due to rust and stress, the car is done. If rust isn't an issue, its a deal (shoot, I'll take it if you don't) you might want to inquire as to whether either the engine and/or trans has been swapped out. If so, dollars to donuts it no longer has an XFi drivetrain. What is the mileage on the clock? If its 150k or less, prolly orig motor. If it just needs cosmetic work, buy it! The MPGs depend on how you drive. As they age, getting extreme mpgs is harder (only 48-50!!) But if you drive nice and study on the freeway, mid-upper 50s no problem. I've pulled 60-67 before, but takes more work and good gas (no eth). I have loads of parts so if you jump, let me know. Metros are like our vans, good vehicles that just need attention b/c of age. Worth it and easy to maintain. Brenton
