noise at startup

Postby finkadelic » Wed Jul 21, 2010 3:06 pm

Hi all,

I have a '96 LE S/C All trac. Sometimes at start-up when the rig is already warm, I notice a relatively loud, grumbly roar, that eventually (5 seconds or so) goes silent. The van runs totally normally. I assume it has something to do with the fan clutch when warm - perhaps a bearing wearing out? The thing is, I never hear it any other time than start-up. It reminds me a bit of my '87 van startup "whirr" before the fan clutch disengages. The only difference is the previa is slightly more grumbly.

Anyone ever had a similar situation? Thanks.

That sounds like a noise I noticed on my daughter's 93 Previa. It would only last a couple seconds after start-up, then was gone. It was enough to raise an eyebrow, but never amounted to anything worth investigating. It was doing it the entire time I owned that rig, and I assume it's still doing it for her. Tim

That's the famous 'previa groan'. Mine does it occasionally. Recently, the engine failed to start after it cranked for a few seconds and the noise presented itself after I stopped cranking. I did not turn the key all the way off to cut power but next time will do so to see if the noise gets cut short. So, it does not appear to be related to anything connected to the crankshaft since the crank wasn't turning. Best guess I have is it's something to do with the fuel system pressurizing. Speaking of, a horrendous screeching seems to come from the back of the van whenever it's under high load - floored heading uphill for a mile or so. Anyone else get this? I also suspect that's fuel system related but no idea what it could be. BTW, fuel pump, filter, and injectors are all new and these noises are the same as they were before new components went in.
